Barcelona City Council signs the TPAN

On February 18, the Barcelona City Council, with Ada Colau in the lead, gave its support to the TPAN

The Barcelona City Council, with Ada Colau as Mayor, supports the TPAN. At the reception, along with Ada Colau, Setsuko, Pedro Arrojo, Carlos Umaña ...

From TwitterAda Colau expressed his impression on this fact:

In Catalan

“In the climate of nuclear escalation, I have also appreciated Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of Hiroshima, for her activism for peace.

From Barcelona we urge the State government to ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. “It’s urgent.”

In Spanish

“In full weather of escalation nuclear, us I have been able to to thank setsuko thurlow, survivor from Hiroshima, its activism for the peace.

From Barcelona we urge the government of the State to ratify the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons from the ONU. Es urgent."

These are the images of the signed document included by the Mayor on her Twitter.

To this appeal must be added that the Spanish reality gives a clear boost to the TPAN.

It is clearly against nuclear weapons and therefore in favor of the signing by Spain of this treaty.

ICAN study on the Spanish reality regarding the nuclear issue

This is explained by ICAN in the summary of its study about the Spanish reality:

“Public opinion in Spain is categorically antinuclear.

In the 1986 referendum to belong to NATO, rejection of nuclear weapons was established as one of its conditions, which would constitute, in practical terms, an on-site prohibition of such weapons.

Moreover, in its criminal code, weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, are prohibited.

Despite this, and due to political pressure from NATO, so far, Spain has voted against all political steps towards the NATO and has not yet signed it.

However, in September 2018, Pedro Sánchez said that he would sign it, a commitment that has not yet been fulfilled, but is still valid.

There is absolutely no legal impediment for Spain to sign and ratify the TPAN.

If so, it would be a historic and revolutionary step towards the universalization of the treaty, as it would contribute significantly to breaking geopolitical pressures and the rhetoric that these weapons are necessary for world security.

Spain's signature is not only possible, but necessary. “The current moment is ideal for Spain to take this historic step, in favor of multilateralism and a culture of peace.”

An achievement fruit of the work of many people

Regarding the signing of the TPAN by the Barcelona City Council, from World without Wars and Violence, we want to record that It has been the result of the work of many people.

In the month of November 2019, taking advantage of the arrival of the Peace Boat (the Peace Boat of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Hibakusha) and the Bamboo, the sailboat that sailed through the Mediterranean making the sea section of the 2nd World March, for a Sea of Peace and free of nuclear weapons, we screened the Documentary at the Peace Boat facilities, inviting the different associations that work for Peace and Disarmament, as well as the Councilor for Global Justice and Cooperation of Barcelona, in the absence of Ada Colau .

There we listen to David Llistar of the City Council, the commitment to support this cause.

And it was on the occasion of the arrival of members of ICAN and Setsuko, the survivor of Hiroshima that appears in the documentary, which organized the meeting with Ada Colau, reaching that agreement of accession of Barcelona, voted in the Plenary Session of the City Council, by all except the PP.

Since World without Wars and Violence, we want to thank all those who in one way or another, have always helped to carry out this purpose.

Although we have not been in the photo, we are very happy with our contribution.
