On October 27, 2019, from Genoa, “Mediterranean Sea of Peace“, the maritime route of the 2nd World March for Peace and Non-Violence, the pacifist event that began in Madrid on October 2 and will end in the Spanish capital on March 8, 2020.
As part of the routes of the March, which began on the five continents, the ship's journey begins from the capital of Liguria "Mediterranean of Peace“, sponsored by the International March Committee, in collaboration with: Exodus Foundation by Antonio Mazzi which has made available one of the two sailboats of the Community of Elba Island, the association for the promotion of marine culture The Nave of Carta della Spezia and Italian Union of Solidarity Candle (Uvs).
The trip will depart from the sea arm in front of the Galata Mu.Ma
The trip will depart from the pier in front of the Galata Mu.Ma, the Museum of the Sea and Migrations of Genoa, and will make a stopover in Marseille and Barcelona, whose arrival will coincide with the landing of the Peace boat, the Japanese NGO ship of the same name that has been sailing around the world for thirty-five years to promote the culture of peace, nuclear disarmament, the protection of human rights, the protection of the environment and sustainable development.
After the Catalan city, the ship will stop in Tunisia, Palermo and Livorno, the last stop will be in Rome, by land, for the meeting with the Italian Geographical Society where the travel diary will be presented.
“Peace, nuclear disarmament, human rights and the environment: these are the themes of the 2nd World March which, ten years after the first, will cross a world in which there are thirty wars in progress and eighteen crisis zones.
At the center of our action is the request to the States to ratify the TPAN
“At the center of our action is the call on States to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to commit to a path to the disarmament of conventional weapons. Concepts already contained in the Barcelona Declaration of 1995 in the Mediterranean Peace Forum, signed by 12 countries,” explains Tiziana Volta Cormio, member of the international team of the March.
“A statement that remained on paper. What we see every day in the Mediterranean is intolerable: Europe, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012, is still the scene of great violence today, it is incapable of fulfilling it.
Weapons leave Europe and there is a proliferation of events dedicated to them in which children are allowed to enter (as in Vicenza, Rimini and soon again in Brescia).
For this reason we have decided to “walk” by sea. We also want to bear witness to the need to say enough to the words of hatred and violence that confront the different cultures that dominate the Mediterranean, but also to denounce violence against the environment, the marine environment in particular on which the climate depends. We want to do it with the powerful weapon of active Non-violence.”
Exodus has not only put some “bandages” on people who stumble
“At a time of profound crisis in society, politics, society and relationships, like the one we are going through, which grows and feeds feelings of fear, mistrust and intolerance, it is important to give strong and tangible signals, responding with nonviolence.
For 35 years, Exodus has not only put some “bandages” on people who stumble, but has also worked daily to communicate positive values in schools, families and society in order to provide alternative and effective responses to problems. serious social problems, with an educational focus.
For this reason, we have always adhered to “peaceful protest” demonstrations and initiatives on important issues, which provide children with the necessary tools to critically and actively address and live in society.
The decision to join the 2nd World March for Peace confirms this fundamental choice – says Don Antonio Mazzi, President of the Exodus Foundation – And doing so “walking” by sea is a doubly significant choice.
Because the sailboat is an extraordinary educational and therapeutic place, which promotes values such as mutual respect, sharing, discipline, the ability to get involved, the spirit of adaptation, effort, beauty and contact with nature, principles that we need for our education and, therefore, also in education for peace.
The 2 World March for Peace and Nonviolence: How to Join and Participate
The first edition of the World March for Peace and Non-Violence, conceived by Rafael de la Rubia, founder of the humanist organization Mundo sin Guerras y Sin Violencia, was held in 2009-2010 and covered 97 countries. For the second edition of the March, in addition to the paths of peace that will cross all continents (in Italy it will pass from Trieste, Fiumicello (Ud), Vicenza, Brescia, Varese, Alto Verbano, Turin, Milan, Genoa, Bologna, Florence , Livorno, Narni, Cagliari, Olbia, Rome, Avellino), Reggio Calabria, Riace, Palermo), the Organizing Committee launched an appeal to pacifist organizations, environmental and civil rights, to individual citizens to promote, throughout the March period, initiatives in their territories on the issues of March of 2019-2020:
- Nuclear disarmament. In 2017, seventy-nine countries signed TPAN, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Before the treaty, nuclear weapons were the only weapons of mass destruction that were not subject to a total ban (chemical and bacteriological weapons are), Article 15 of the TPAN establishes that it will only enter into force when 50 States have ratified and deposited ratification. Currently, 33 countries have ratified the TPAN, with 17 left for the treaty to be effective. Italy has not ratified the TPAN.
- Refoundation of the United Nations, with the constitution in the Security Council of an Environmental Security Council and a Socioeconomic Security Council.
- Sustainable development and fight against hunger in the world
- Defense of human rights against all forms of discrimination
- Non-violence as a new culture and active non-violence as a method of action.
