The rector of the ULL receives the March

The Rector of the University of La Laguna receives the promoters of the 2 World March for Peace and Nonviolence

The Promoters of the 2nd World March for Peace and Nonviolence They were received this Wednesday 16 of October by the rector of the University of La Laguna, Rosa Aguilar.

He has expressed support for this initiative that aims to call on governments to build societies stripped of conflict and aggression, while advocating the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

This initiative gives continuity to the first march, held at 2009, and which aims to travel the world and end the 8 of March of 2020 in Madrid. From this same capital they left last October 2, to tour Seville, Cádiz, Tangier, Marrakech and then, at this time, several islands of the Canary archipelago, from where they will leave for Mauritania.

Activists from around the world are carrying out activities in 65 countries

A total of 400 activists from around the world are carrying out activities similar to this one in 65 countries. This march is preceded by the one in 2018 in the South American continent, which had a great impact in different countries and encouraged to organize the now valid and more global character.

From the first world march to the next, ten years later, the international scene has changed substantially, the protesters explained. Armed conflicts of local character continue to appear but the climatic emergency has taken the agenda and put a good part of Western society on alert. On the other hand, the nuclear threat persists and tensions between Russia and the United States show that the danger remains latent.

There are no graduate studies at universities about nonviolence

The proponents of this initiative, which in Tenerife is led by Ramón Rojas, a member of the administration and services staff of this university, explained to the rector that there are no graduate studies in universities about non-violence, a phenomenon also little known in the schools. "We need a psycho-pedagogical support for the actions we intend to carry out in the educational centers," they said.

Thus, the group considers it essential to involve the new generations, and in fact in the actions carried out in Spanish schools, nearly two thousand students have participated this past year. "There is a lot of sensitivity about peace among young people, both here and in other parts of the world like India or different African countries."

In addition, another of the activities that this group has launched, in collaboration with this academic center, has been the conduct of a nuclear weapons consultation open to the entire university community. You can participate in this survey from today until the next October 22 through this link by adding this key: ULLnoviolencia. The results of the consultation will be published once the question period ends.
