Quito supports the “Nonviolent October”

The Government of the Metropolitan District of Quito, capital of Ecuador, in plenary session, with the scope D. Jorge Yunda at the head, received the speakers of different humanist organizations that converge in the “Nonviolent Space” and that have been carrying out, since 10 years, October for Peace and Nonviolence.

Nonviolent Space is a place where collectives, organizations, people who have been working for a long time for active Nonviolence in our villages, for a nonviolent life converge.

An effort from 10 Years with the Fair of Nonviolence initiatives and from 5 years with October Nonviolent.

It is an effort of peace and nonviolence militants and many dedicated people and organizations to live nonviolently.

Ten years of the Fair of nonviolent initiatives and 5 with the nonviolent October, and we dedicate in October with “passion” to expand nonviolence activities.

Why october?

October is the month chosen for its special meaning as it is the October 2, International Day of Nonviolence for the United Nations, anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, in homage to the leader of the Indian Independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy of Nonviolence

Taking advantage of that day it was decided to concentrate on that month the maximum number of activities in favor of peace and nonviolence.

This October we will have the motto: "Nonviolence is my choice."

This year we decided to go further and seek collaboration with the metropolitan district to launch this initiative that is good for the municipality and for everyone.

We request that this month, you join the activities of "October for Nonviolence". Let it begin on October 2 carrying out a multitude of activities that promote Peace and Nonviolence.

Work was done with the invaluable support of Councilman Juan Manuel Carrión, in preparing a motion for a resolution

From two weeks ago, prior consultation, we worked with the invaluable support of the councilman Juan Manuel Carrión, in the elaboration of a motion for a resolution for the Metropolitan Council to include the "October for Peace and Nonviolence" as a priority of the municipal government .

The 17 / 09 / 2019, in plenary session, the humanist promoters of the “Nonviolent Space” were able to present their proposal and invite all members of the municipal government to participate in it.

It was also proposed that the Metropolitan Council not only include "October for Peace and Nonviolence", go beyond "nonviolent October" and work permanently for nonviolence. How to do this?

Carrying out 3 initiatives

The first one to carry out the initiative of “violence-free zones”, starting mainly with the educational system, following the public health spaces and the rest of the institutional spaces and that each institution meets the requirements that allow us to say, this is a space nonviolent

The second, a long-term activity is proposed to the metropolitan council, for a Nonviolent Quito, in which activities are carried out that encourage everyone to build nonviolence from all perspectives.

It is something that only we can build, nobody will give it to us. It is something that must be built on a permanent and daily purpose.

Finally, we invite you to plan something together to receive the World Team of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence, whose journey starts on October 2 and will go through the different continents and countries bearing the flag of Nonviolence and Peace for the Planet, receive them on December 7 of 2019, when they arrive in Quito and strengthen the message of Peace and Nonviolence for the world.

"Unanimously, the Metropolitan Council decided that the Municipality of Quito actively work in the development and realization of October for Peace and Nonviolence this year and onwards.

The mayor, Jorge Yunda, called to convert political, digital, labor and personal spaces, in the example of nonviolence.
